I decided that visually seeing and participating in the programs was the best way for me to understand them so I can evaluate my role. My visit surpassed what I expected.

I expected to sit and watch Oscar edit some videos and tell me what he does all day and give me a tour of the office. The only thing that met my expectations was the tour. I went upstairs to meet, Kate Carter, who is the founder of Life Chronicles and Oscars mentor. She had so much life and energy, I could have listened to her for hours. What I thought would be a 40-1 hour visit turned into almost 2 hours of listening to inspirational story after story.

Life Chronicles is a non-profit organization that as the title says, chronicles life. They started the non-profit by video taping terminally ill or elderly people. These people would leave messages to loved ones, tell their stories and share anything so that they would be remember when they passed away. However, I learned that the organization has taken so much more on and has affected so many lives. When she showed me the promotional video I was trying to hard to hold back the tears. She remarked that a day without crying at Life Chronicles would be incomplete.

During my visit there, I realized more and more how incredible and special the Forest Foundation is to me. We are connected to so many powerful and life changing organizations. We have amazing leaders, such as Oscar, who has the heart, drive and passion for making a difference in peoples lives. It is so nice to know that there are other people out there with a simple vision of changing the world. Whether it is making a videotape to remember a loved one or supporting leaders there are people out there making a difference.

-Morgan

Roses are Red, Violets are Blue, the SB Apples n Honey was really Coo (slang for cool)

I can officially confirm the truths about the rumors that UCSB is a party school. I will first say that UCSB is rated as the top 3 UC academically, which makes us (even though I am an alumni) pretty damn smart. BUT we do know how to PARTY (especially us Jews)!

Oct. 4th 2006 was the craziest most creative party at the three story club Q’s in downtown SB. It was the infamous APPLES N HONEY party. Throughout the night, members from the foundation walked around with a camera asking people what they would do to change the world. The responses ranged from, “Roses are red, Violets are blue. I’m having fun and so should you!” to “feed all the homeless people”. Small and two of my Program Directors (Oscar and Aaron Schiff) rocked the mic outside the club attracting all the young college students.

The total amount of people that entered the club PAID was 390. Which means there were approximately 400 people that filled the club. It was a huge success. I must say that I was extremely nervous when it was 10:00 and only 15 people were in the club. But I failed to remember that college students love to make fashionably late entrances. Nevertheless the event was incredible.

In a recent flash article, Jessi Cazary (the event planner) commented, “A specific point in the night that really struck me was when we initiated the miracle. I’ll be honest, originally I was a little apprehensive about the whole miracle thing and thought it would seem a little too corny for the event I had envisioned. Yet once I made my way up to the DJ booth that night, my worries had disappeared. I asked everyone to turn to the person next to him or her and share what he or she is looking forward to for this New Year. I believe that this was an opportunity for the attendees of this event to bring something inside of them out and make it a reality just as I had done with Apples ‘N’ Honey.”

Apples n Honey SB 2006 was a night to remember…since we are all about creating memories here at the foundation; I can say without hesitation, these memories will last a lifetime…

-Morgan

A touching story

Sarah Jebrock runs a really exciting program in the Bay Area where she paris up volunteers with immigrants and refugees to tutor them in ESL. This is a portion of an e-mail sent to me from Sarah Jebrock.
"...Also, a wonderful thing happened with the ESL program today! Usually when
I speak to the refugee families for the first time (in person or on the
phone) I ask them to tell me about how they got here, what there specific
needs are, etc. These stories are unfortunately all extremely sad...most
of the families are seprated, with a spouse or children still left in
Guatemala, and either in danger or out of contact. I always feel really
good that our program can bring some joy into their lives by providing
them with a teacher and friend, but I have to say that sometimes those sad
stories are too much. But today was amazing- I met (in person) a
Guatemalan refugee couple that was interested in the program. I asked them
about their story, and they told me that after 5 years of being separated,
the wife in Guatemala and the husband here, they were able to be together
again, AND, all of their children are here with them! This is extremely
rare from what I've seen so far, and it made me so happy to see a family
safe and undivided! I was also able to find a volunteer for them, and now
they will be learning English too! The story just gets better and better..."
This story made me feel amazing about what we at the forest foundation are doing!
--Brady

Up in the Yay!

Hello there!

Aaron here, live from the Bay Area. I have never been in a position like this before. I was anxious to put my leadership skills to the test.
I spent a couple of hours putting together the agenda for the night. I wanted to come up with a great icebreaker game and an effective first meeting. By the time I finished it was 4:00 (the meeting started at 8). I was about to print them all out when I realized that my printer wasn’t working. I figured I would go to Hillel early to print out all the agendas, meet with my last PD, eat dinner and relax before the big hour.
When I arrived at Hillel the doors were closed. I realized that they were not on school hours so the facility would not be open that late. I quickly called Dave and Aaron to ask for advice. I remembered that Brad, one of my PDs had a great house in IV that he suggested I use for a social or meeting one day. I don’t think he realized that it would be so soon. Thanks to Brad we had a place to meet. BUT I still had no agendas. I called around and finally got a hold of Jessi. I went over to use her printer. However, her printer was out of ink and was taking forever to print. We finally figure it all out by 7:40. We rushed over to Brad’s so that I could be there before everyone. I had some of the PDs calling me asking where to park, where to go. I felt like I had drunk 3 cups of coffee. Instead of being nervous I was pumped with adrenal and laughing at all the things that already went wrong.
I rushed up to the bathroom before the meeting started. I got a call from Marissa asking if she was in the right house while I was trying to figure out how to button my pants. Of course the button broke. Luckily, all the misfortunes put me at ease. I was really jittery and excited throughout the whole meeting. I wasn’t nervous because I had so many “oh, man is this really happening moments” that nothing else could have happened. If it did, I probably would have just laughed.
That was my first meeting. I look forward to more this year. Hopefully they will be as exciting as the first. I just hope I don’t break my pants again.

Yom Kippur...

Hello everyone out there in the FF world and social changespace.

last week marked Rosh Hashanah, the Jewish New Year. I love this time of year. It provokes much needed thought, self-reflection and a general feeling of groundness, if that's a word. Okay, maybe feeling centered is better. On Sunday night many Jews will fast for about 25 hours, yes, that means no food or water at all.

According to tradition, on Yom Kippur, Jews become undergoe a systemic transformation from regular human being to an actual angel, a true servant of God. We are clean, empty and free of materialistic desires and substances. Food is no longer of value to us, an interference and impediment to clarity and acceptance. It's quite an experience - the fast. Eventually, the pain and discomfort caused by an empty stomach turns to an a settling numbness, and that's where the true magic of Yom Kippur, for me at least, begins to take effect. It's as if my mind is a car that's desperately trying to get somewhere, but it's got trouble starting. And the engine starts to rumble only after I drain the vehicle of all oil, gas, and water. But the passenger is always there. I wanted to wish you all a happy Jewish New Year and an awesome fast.

Out of this world... or at least this country

Matt, Refael and Ibrahim of the Montevideo, Uruguay Jewish community pose here with big smiles on their face as their community welcomes in the newest Moishe House. Forest Foundation exec David Cygielman travelled to Montevideo along with two other South American cities to help them get started on their Apples 'N Honey party last year <www.applesnhoney.com> when Montevideo turned $1,000 into a community party that drew over 1,500 people. This began a beautiful relationship which has now blossomed into the home of American service representative Matthew Hollander and Israeli representatives Roi Elrom, Refael Elon and Zev (just Zev) - the fearless foursome holding down Moishe House Montevideo.

The group has already begun programming in the house with Hebrew lessons, English lessons, Shofar lessons, a dinner with traditional Israeli and Turkish foods and much much more to come. The gang also helped support a hillel program that tried to simulate American Idol called "Operation Hatzlajah" where over 600 people came out to see 8 participants duke it out for a trip to Israel - each participant, backed by a live band, had to sing 3 songs; one in English, one in Spanish and one in Hebrew. The crew is also planning a break-fast for Monday which will double as their housewarming party. So, if you're in the neighborhood feel free to stop by.

Keep an eye out for Moishe Houses in Washington D.C., the East Bay of Northern California, and Abuja, Nigeria as well; which will all be starting in October. The good times just keep on getting gooder.

Happy New Year! In a nutshell, I'm a San Francisco native, schooled in Chicago, lover of good food, tea-drinking, romance languages and Radiohead, a major Virgo, a cook and a waitress, etcetera, etcetera. We've got lots of fun things lined up to work on for the Moishe House program, which I think is a brilliant program all around. I'm so excited about the Forest Foundation. I've been on the lookout for someone kind and wise and brave enough to support young people as a real and working part of the world. It seems like it would go without saying that the young adult community should be encouraged by all those wacky grownups to explore its power and identity... unfortunately it's usually not so easy. I'm really pleased to become a part of a company that believes in the potential of my generation. I think we're awfully cool and smart and fun and sweet, and I believe that we can do a lot. I hope to be meeting some of you soon -- happy indian summer, all!

D.C. is for LOVERS

Moishe House is coming back from the summer with a bang! The first couple of meetings had a more serious tone and had most of us wondering, “What the hell is going on?” Actually, the “what the hell is going on?” question still remains and lingers in the back of my head when talking to Morris. However, half way through the week the serious tone disappeared and some and I MEAN SOME of Morris’s visions became clear. The meetings now include Aaron laughing until he pees or cries, which ever comes first, all of us cracking jokes and Morris making at least 5 outrageous comments that will guarantee at least a smile.
In our meeting today we talked about “tits n ass” which turned into “tucas n ass” (Yiddish word for ass), which turned into “tits n tucas (TNT)”. Morris proposes we make a Magazine called TNT with nude people with great articles and sell it. This is just one outrageous idea that Morris proposed.
Later today I went by Morris to give Sedo a wireless device in order to make the Internet work in our office. He started talking to me about TNT the magazine and asked me to start figuring out how to find a publisher and create this idea. He wanted there to be art in it and most importantly have naked bodies. Actually, the most important thing was really good articles that people will read. I chuckled to myself, thinking that’s there is no way to sell a magazine with naked people, art and good articles in bookstores (which he included as a most).
However, I have learned this week that Morris throws his crazy uncensored ideas our way and it is up to us to think about it and create it. I already learned, being in the foundation for almost 2 years now, that ANYTHING is possible. I can make my dreams reality. Now I am being pushed to be more creative every day.
Make sure you keep your eye out for TNT; it will probably be on shelves Fall 2007. Actually, Morris will probably make me have it done my next week. I hope you enjoy it!
-Morgan (regional director/publisher)

In the Field

One of the great facets of this job is flexibility and learning new working styles. Last year, I was primarily a do-er, out in the field and working with Program Directors, running around town and making sure everything was running smoothly.

Lately, I've been in a mentoring seat, advising our new staff on important decisions and news, giving guidance and support to our team. It's nice to play that role, but to be honest, I miss cracking down and actually working on projects. Moving back though, I see how the Forest Foundation, by its mission of creating young leaders, is opening up new amazing opportunities every day.

In the words of Jordan Fruchtman (FF alumnus), "Every problem is an opportunity!"

Shabbat Shalom,

Aaron

The lost tribes of Israel?

In my current research of Remote Jewish communities, I have come across so many interesting and diverse groups of people that I never knew existed. Through my work in this area of the forest foundation, two different communities have caught my eye in particular. I never thought that there were so many Jews in Africa, but never even dreamed that their would be a community of close to a thousand Jews in Uganda, and a group as small as around one hundred or so in Ghana. Although these two communities are very different in their religious practices, size, culture, and history, I have high hopes that we will be working hard with them in developing their community and identity with Judaism. How fascinating is it that a group of 70+ Jews in Ghana, isolated from much of the world with little physical connection to Judaism, didn't know that an actual modern day Israel existed? Yet, these Jews still learn, study, pray, and give themselves to Hashem with all of their hearts? Imagine if a few of the younger members of these communities could travel to Israel and report back to their families and friends with stories of the land of milk (apples) and honey...what a miracle this would be!

Forest High

A new and exciting program is about to start in the Bay Area. I can't wait to get this started and see where these amazing youths will lead the Forest Foundation.
--Brady

Matzah Ballstars

Since everyone else is posting cool pictures of themselves - I mind as well join in on the phone. Moishe House San Francisco kicked off the latest in their programming with the Matzah Ballstars Softball team - which lost it's first game 13-9 last monday but looked great doing it. Shown here is me hitting the ball with precision and perfection. I think this ended up being a fly out to left center.

Tonight the Matzah Ball Stars play two under the lights. This has been a great organizing technique as many people inevitable come out to regular events and there is a real sense of community being fostered among the teammates. I decided after graduation I was going to test myself by taking a month trip to Australia and Fiji alone. I kept myself distracted before getting on the plane so that I wouldn’t let my mind wonder with fears, anxiety and false expectations. I loved every minute I was away. I took it as an opportunity to explore the many aspects of myself and to let loose and have “no worries” as they say in Australia or “ a sang-a na- langa” (Fijian).
I was confronted with daily challenges both physically and emotionally. In Australia, I zip lined through a rainforest, went white water rafting and was the only one on my boat who didn’t fall off (that doesn’t include the 5 times the guide tipped us). I learned how to throw a boomerang and a spear, so if I get really mad, you better think twice before pushing my buttons! One of the highlights was that I got to dance on stage with the Aboriginals in front of hundreds of people. I met “heeps” of people from all over the world. Being close friends with primarily Jewish kids similar to myself, I was thrilled that my three closest friends were Chinese Canadian, English Indians and a native Australian.
After 2 ½ weeks in Australia, I was excited to go to Fiji and just lounge around on the beaches soaking up the sun. To my surprise, Fiji was way more than I beaches. Instead, we went to the villages, the schools and played with all the young Fijian kids. Their lives were so simple: no Internet, no running water, some of villages didn’t have electricity. However, the kids and the people in Fiji were some of nicest people I have ever met. Everyone waves, smiles and talks to you as if they were your best friends. There is so much warmth in that country, and I’m not referring to the sun, which was nice as well.
When I returned, I came back with dozens of bug bites, a fabulous tan, and a lifetime of memories. I was excited to return home to take a vacation from my vacation. However, the day I stepped off the plane I was instructed by Dave to return to Santa Barbara for the full time training and retreat. I came “straight away” (Australia lingo) with my backpackers back pack and mini rolling suitcase. Again, I had no expectation of the 2 weeks I was planning on spending in SB with my co-workers/friends. The challenges, adventures and lack of sleep I experienced in Australia and Fiji seemed to carry on in my two weeks of bonding. I learned a lot about all the full timers including how Aaron’s nostrils flare when he laughs, Dave makes the best Indian tribe leader, Brady is the hottest chick I have ever seen and Levi makes a mean guacamole.
After my long romantic walks on the beach with Aaron and Brady, lots of board games and a few hours a day creating trainings for this year I decided it was time to take another vacation. I couldn’t think of a better place than CANADA. My boyfriend took me to Vancouver for his birthday. After playing with the beluga whales at the aquarium, seeing a drag show and riding around Stanley park on a tandem bike I figured I was ready to start my job.
So, here I am. I’m back in SB and getting down to business. This week I am no longer a nomad. I am getting settled into an actual home, with my own bed and no more suitcases! Well maybe a few more, at least until I am completely settled. I have been contacting my PDs, learning about my job and picking Aaron and Dave’s brain apart. I have already learned a lot about myself in this week a lone. Traveling may have been fun and challenging, but it was nothing compared to the adventure I have ahead of me! To conclude, I will leave you all with a nice big loud warm Fijian BULA!!! Most of the students that I will be working with are still out of town and even the ones that are in town are still on Summer Vacation. This leaves me in a place that is similar to the way I feeling about being just two days away from the opening of Snakes on a Plane... Stoked!
I have amazing program directors coming back from their summer adventures and a few great new people to add to the group. Not only do I have the existing group, but I am starting a high school group up here called FOREST HIGH!!! So far it looks like the kids are primarily going to be from Camp Tawonga; a Jewish summer camp that I have worked at for many years. These kids just did a teen service learning trip to Costa Rica where they helped with schools; painting them, making gardens and compost boxes. They also went out and did a lot of reforestation! These are amazing, dedicated, smart teens, and I can't wait to see them reach their potential through the Forest Foundation!
So for now I have to sit here in my office. I'm eagerly waiting for all the teen applications to come in and for the school year to start. I am doing everything I can to be ready so that when the first school bell rings... I'm ready to rock and roll!
There are snakes on this mother &@*$^#% plane!
Brady

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://forestfoundation.blogspot.com/2006/08/oakland-there-i-am.html' title='Oakland... Who would have thought that within the same week as turning in my last term paper of college and filling in the final bubble of my undergraduate career, that I would find myself writing emails to Taiwan, Uganda, Argentina, and Russia. Working on projects that I love in the most amazing atmosphere is the best graduation present ever! Each morning I wake up to hear the daily plans of my fellow Forest Foundation workers, some of the happiest, most hard-working people I have ever met. I couldn't ask for a more inspiring way to start the day.

Working as the Remote Jewish Communities Director, I am currently contacting communities from all over the globe to take part in our second annual Apples 'n Honey program. With the idea that every Jewish community should have the opportunity to come together in celebration of their Jewish identity and New Year no matter where they are, the Forest Foundation offers monetary grants to areas of the world where this would otherwise be impossible. In the effort to seek out and support the development of Jewish communities both large and small in every corner of the world where diminished resources and limited access to Jewish life are decreasing identity, I have explored the internet, met with friends who have just returned from studying abroad, and have contacted Hillels and organizations internationally. As of now, it looks as though communities in Argentina, the Former Soviet Union, Mexico, and Ghana will be taking part in the Forest Foundation's sponsored international celebrations of the Jewish new year, Apples 'n Honey.

Rosh Hashanah is just around the corner and with each day I hope to get a new community on board. I have discovered Jews in places that I never knew existed. Tunisia, Taiwan, Tahiti, Zurich, Malta, and Cuba are just some of the areas that I will be working with in developing their Jewish community. I am so thrilled to be apart of such an amazing foundation and opportunity. These celebrations will offer a setting for these communities to come together in celebration of their Jewish identity and will be a spark for inspiration that will change their community forever. This year is looking like it can only be sweet as honey!

-Levi

Spittling things Up

With most of our collegiate students away on break, we set up a group of high school students to work in our Internship program. As Morris might say, "We're starting 'em early."

Program Directors attend weekly Trainings, meetings, and starting yesterday, will meet 1:1 with Marissa, Levi, or myself. Our old model wasn't working as well as we wanted, so as to give some experience and divide up work, the 3 group leaders will now be responsible for smaller groups, allowing for far closer attention to our high schoolers. I am really enjoying it although I feel like a lot of what the book suggests is fairly obvious and I find myself thinking, why didn't I think of that. For exaple, the first habit is "be proactive". That seems pretty obvious. If you are reactive than you are waiting for others to tell you what to do, both personally and professionally. Why would anyone want to spend their time that way. The book says "act or be acted upon" and that is my thought of the day, take control of your life, your future, your profession, your emotions, your health, your happiness.

-Rachel

4th of JEW-ly

What can be more patriotic than a bunch of Jews coming together on our nation's birthday to watch beloved Italy and Germany duke it out in the world's most popular event? Nothing. That's the answer. Nothing - and that's exactly what Moishe House San Francisco did this past Tuesday. Pictured here are just a few of the 65+ folks that stopped over at the magical house on Fell St. With televisions on in the front living room and the beautiful back deck - next to the grill - Moishe House San Francisco set a record for the most number of Americans ever to gather in one place on it's nations birthday and watch men run around and not score for almost an entire 2 hours. You may have read my recent post about my battle with electronics and technology...well it happened again. I broke my digital camera. I say "I broke it" thought I'm really not sure if that's true. I have absolutely no idea how but the screen is cracked. I'm sure it is my fault though it appears as though someone stepped on the screen or maybe jumped up and down on it. It seems like I would remember this happening (very similar to what happened with my cell phone just weeks ago)! Do you think it's possible that someone is stomping on my purse when I leave the room? Or banging it against the wall, or punting it like a football?
That's all I've been able to come up with, any other ideas are welcome as I would love to know what keeps happening so that I can stop it before it strikes again.

Good news is I think I've convince Canon to fix the camera for free!

-Rachel

Exciting Initiatives - Real Differences

At the beginning of this month I (black Giants shirt) got to move into a beautiful apartment in San Francisco with best friends Aaron (hair shirt), Dave (basketball jersey) and new friend Maia (female). I switched from Nextel to Sprint. I'm not even exactly sure what that means because it appears as though they're the same company. The phones, stores, and service are all different though. Anyway I wasn't happy with Nextel so I made the switch. and then a few days later my screen on the new phone went blank. Contrary to what the woman at the store will tell you, I have no idea what caused the screen to disappear. She told me I was clearly lying and that I had dropped or stepped on it. Pretty good customer service right there. Anyway after much frustration, waiting, yelling, crying, nail biting, I convinced the company to give me a new phone for free. I'm still fairly certain that some $150 charge will be showing up on my bill sometime in the future when I least expect it.
Anyway I guess my point in all of this is, well there is no point. I wish I didn't have to live with a cell phone but I do.

I'm also having a fight with another great invention I could do without. My email is contstantly telling me that it is 90% full and will start bouncing people's emails back to them. The problem is it's not full. I've deleted 100's of emails but it doesn't seem to recognize this. And this error message continues to pop up on my screen approximately every 5 seconds.

You're probably wondering what all of this has to do with The Forest Foundation. I'm still trying to figure that out myself.

The Gift of Growth

In January of this year I learned that staff members of the Forest Foundation are given a personal growth budget that they can use to better themselves as people. As soon as I found this out I immediately began to look into opportunities for myself to partake in a "Counseling Intensive" care of the international organization Re-Evaluation Counseling <www.rc.org> or often referred to as Co-Counseling.
I grew up around the organization with my mom serving as the reference person for San Francisco most of my life and in high school I began to take on the theory and practice myself and even taught a few classes to friends. The style of counseling is similar to many other forms in its focus on getting people to listen to one another. It differs in its approach - setting up communities in which people do not pay each other to listen but rather trade listening to each other. The theory laid out encourages people to develop strong and lasting counseling relationships with one another and emphasize that when people are listened to well and cared about they have the safety to release emotions, heal from old hurts and "re-evaluate" the present and think more clearly about it.
For community members that are active and take leadership there is an opportunity to come to Seattle for a week, where the only physical space for the organization is, and be given 20 hours of one-way attention from a team of counselors that do this for a living (as opposed to all other community members and leaders that participate in the communities outside of their work-lives). Each day I reported to the office by 9am and had a series of hour long sessions peppered into an 8 hour period. There were 5 different people that gave me sessions and they traded notes with one another about what they gathered from the time spent with me.
I could go on and on about all of the great things that came out of this opportunity but I mostly want to acknowledge the wonderful foresight laid out by Morris Squire in realizing the importance of emphasizing personal growth as a key to a progressive-minded organization. Despite balancing the counseling this week with ample work I feel refreshed and ready to take on much more and think more and more outside the box.
Best of all I had ideal housing - staying with the Moishe House in Seattle (shown in picture). Great folks that I had only been able to talk to on the phone and see in pictures since coming up here in February to start the house. Lucky for me they had two events while I was here and I got to see the Moishe House magic for myself. Look for me in Seattle's pictures on the web!!

Thank you Morris for an incredible week!!

- Isaac

Cooking Class

Yesterday was hilarious. I was bought at a silent auction a few weeks ago to teach a cooking class, and yesterday we held the class. It was me and Aaron as the teachers and the students, they were 10 Jewish mothers. Who am I to teach Jewish mothers how to cook. It turns out, they were very receptive, other than when I used seasoning and spices and they all enjoyed themselves. The highlight of the evening was when Aaron made a speach about how he got into cooking and he stated that he enjoys being creative and that the other night he made a baked Salmon with Eggo waffle syrup and onions. One of the moms said that she almost threw up in her mouth which is a great start to any cooking class if you ask me.

jordan

Camping

I just returned from a week away at Camp Dream Street. Dream Street is a week-long camp for kids with physical disabilities. It takes place in Mississippi. Each camper is paired one to one with a counselor for the week. I was in charge of the Great Expectations program which is the program for the high school participants. It was amazing! I'm super tan and extremely tired. The week was spent swimming, climbing, cooking, laughing, etc. For many of these kids it's the one time during the year that they are treated like "normal" children. It's truly a wonderful experience and I look forward to it all year. This was my tenth summer to attend...

But it's back to work! I now have five PD's here in New Orleans who are all doing really great things.

-Rachel

Critical Mass

Well, a lot is going on in my life right now, particularly this week. I'm trying to wrap up everything with the Foundation and make sure I let everyone know about all the logistical stuff that I've kept stored mainly in my head over the past two years (open accounts, renewal times, printers, etc.). It's a little more difficult than I thought it would be because it's all been in my head until now, and I just can't help but think I'm forgetting certain things. If I am, it's not exactly disasterous, because I'll always be around to help out and answer questions or whatever the Foundation needs, but I'm trying to be as thorough as possible to minimize any trouble Dave and Aaron and the rest could run into next year. In addition, I've got the LSAT exactly one week from today, and that's occupying a great deal of my thoughts for the moment. So, there's a lot of things kind of approaching critical mass, you could say. But I'm in good spirits, and very optimistic right now for the Foundation and myself.

Wish me luck on the LSAT!

Logan

Moishe House Boston!!

Another few months have passed and another Moishe House has begun. I made the trip out to Boston last Wednesday and met with Margie, Ben, Ari and Alyson to discuss the logistics for their new home. Margie has been living in her home for almost a year and organizing Jewish community out of it under the name Kavod Jewish Social Justice House. With funding and support from Moishe House Margie is pulling in other key organizers and taking the project up a notch or two with a wider variety and higher frequency of events. This has been an incredible successful project! Not that it's over, I'm just saying....
In Uptown New Orleans (where I live and where Tulane is) life is mostly back to "normal". For the most part things are reopened, people have returned home and the trash gets picked up fairely regulary. Certainly some of our favorite restaurants have decided not to come back, we still don't have recycling and everything closes earlier than it used to but things look and feel as they should. Taking the time to clean up in Lakeview every other week gives us all a reality check that areas of the city are still in really bad shape. REALLY BAD SHAPE. Sorry not trying to be dramatic but it's been almost ten months and there are neighborhoods that are still really desolate. It will take years for them to return to any sort of normalcy. Oh and we had our election this weekend (run off actually). Should be interesting in the months to come.

-Rachel

Summer is here!! In 4 months a whole lot has happened but it is certainly is not what I expected. I have started to think about where I expected the foundation to be by the summer compared to where it is now. I definitely expected things to grow quicker than they have. I also did not realize how much time it would take to just tell people about The Forest Foundation and get the word out. It's all a little more complicated than I originally anticipated. But it's been an exciting challenge and one of my biggest successes is when I meet someone and tell them what I do and they already know what The Forest Foundation is. I'm in the process of setting my goals for the fall, perhaps they will be a bit more realistic now that I have a better understanding of what it takes.

Rachel

In the Field

Last post I talked about organization, and how I've learned many strategies to calm me down and become more efficient.

Today ROCKED simply because I have a new format of my agenda and workday. Typically I hand in a list of things to do, but since I currently work on 5 different areas, I classified each action item into its respective category. Now, I've divided my day up into Program Directors, the Flash, Marketing, Festival, and other/misc. stuff. It's 3:30, I've accomplished nearly everything, and I've even had time to myspace! Yesterday was an intense and busy day, filled with band practice, media buying, engaging in a conference call with my mom and a few vendors who only speak Hebrew, and mentoring one of my Program Directors.

Jordan remarked that I entered the workforce like a sponge, ready to soak in everything all the time. I remember those first few weeks in August, when programs and work would hop from my desk to my car for the ride back home to the shower to my dreams. Needless to say, I didn't wake up feeling refreshed. I've taken on many new projects, and it has led me feeling sometimes overwhelmed with everything, until David shook me up and said to organize my mind on paper. That's what I've been doing - writing stuff down, and finishing projects on time. I feel alive again! Thanks Dave! I had the ability to pass that on to the aforementioned Program Director, and I can see how my suggestions instantly soothed him. He just looked lighter. Another day, another miracle.

Opportunity

The CEO of Sun Microsystems had some advice to offer in an interview. I am going to try to paraphrase. Every problem presents us with opportunities. You are hired to figure out what the opportunities are and how we can capitalize on them. Therefore, if there are no problems, there is no job, it’s that simple. So the next time you face a problem or seemingly major catastrophe, try to think of it as an opportunity for something better, or to try a new approach to a familiar situation.

NSC

Thought I'd let everyone know today how the Network for Social Change is going. To be honest, it's been a challenge for me about how to get the work out. Up until recently, I sort of felt like I'd been floundering, kind of running towards an end that wasn't there. I don't know why I felt like that, possibly because I'd been contacting schools left and right with not a lot of feedback, but ever since my trip to Esalen I've been seeing things in a new light, the NSC included. Now I'm content in the knowledge that the NSC is comparable to that old saying about Rome - it's not built in a day. The seeds I've been laying haven't sprouted into a garden yet, but I'm confident that when Aaron takes over he'll have a field that's been cultivated for harvest, if you're following my analogy. I've had some great help lately also from Brett "Intern" Kadesh, who's really stepped up in contacting several universities. We have our first program, Girls in Motion, set for the coming months, and soon I'm sure we'll be seeing more programs sprouting up. Good things lie ahead.

Logan

Picking Up the Pace

Up until now The Forest Foundation in New Orleans was moving along slowly. In our last conversation we talked at length about ownership and how important that is. It's been ages since I last blogger, and boy/girl do I miss it! It really is quite therapeutic and a great way to let the world know the ins and outs of our lives and work with the Foundation.

Work has been tough with Jewish College Night. Lately I've been feeling scattered and overwhelmed. Dave shook me up and said it's okay to finish things, and that I need to prioritize, schedule, and commit to things. I've been multitasking, thinking I can accomplish 50 million diff things every day, when realistically, that poppycock. Today I made a list of items on my agenda and feel GREAT. Logg and I put posters, i picked up food, had a great group meeting, went to the jewish festival meeting, and took care of so much stuff in between. its easier when you have a team to support you and help you out when needed. i guess yesterday i realized i cant and shouldnt do everything by myself. no wrong in asking for help. so thanks everyone.

love and respect,

aaron

An important election for New Orleans

We had elections on April 22nd and the run offs are to be held on May 20th. As of next week I will start working 3 days a week instead of 2....

Rachel

Jewish College Night on Thursday was a huge success!! Sorry everybody, I forgot to post my blog yesterday, but I do have a good excuse- my internet was all freaky. Anyway, over the weekend I was lucky enough to spend three days that absolutely flew by at the Esalen Institute in Big Sur. I had such a great time it's hard to put in words. The property is absolutely beautiful, the food amazing, and the group I was with really bonded better than anyone could have expected. I feel rejuvenated and full of energy since I've gotten back, and I'm looking to carry that through the next few months. I am doing a study (and i use the term loosly) about what motivates people. Specifically I am trying to figure out why I interview students who want to be Program Directors but then they don't take the time to fill out the applications. I sent a survey out to a bunch of the people I interviewed (and probably would have hired) to get some feedback. Still awaiting the responses.
I have 3 interviews on Thursday so I'm trying to prepare myself for them. At first I considered the idea that some people just may not want to work for the foundation, which is fine; however most of the students I have met with very much want to work for foundation. I do realize it's a tough time of year and that the application takes time but I hope in the end that taking the hour or two to fill out the application becomes a proiority.
Rachel

In the Field

Hello, hello.

It's been a while since last post, but put down the phone, no need to call the Blogge cops. My team and I have been slaving away during Passover crunching for Jewish College Night, our biggest, most involved let's say, event of the year. In just a matter of 2 days, we've sold out 150 seats on a bus, and were almost forced to charter another bus. Well, not forced. We enjoy working hard. Keeps us on our toes. The picture to your left is from our retreat, which somehow seems like ages ago. The Foundation is a very dynamic business: most, if not nearly all of our staff is still in college. (The rest of us just tend to act like were still enrolled). Preparations are well underway for next year, cultivating our leaders and looking forward to the future. we have a lot of seniors and im already feeling down that they're leaving. although conversely, you gotta be out with the old to bring in the new.

-Aaron

Thoughts

The thought of the day is on motivation. What motivates you? Is it an internal drive to succeed? Does your motivation come from the people in your life like your friends, coworkers, or loved ones? April's not really even summer yet. We have months (approximately 5) of super hot and humid weather to come. But I can't complain (well, I actually can and am) because I would prefer this to months of cold weather any day.
Anyway...I just had a great meeting at Tulane Hillel. I will be moving my office there within the next few weeks. I think we'll be working on some projects together and will be able to provide great resources for each other. I also have a conference call this evening to go over the details for our third Beautify Lakeview which will take place this Saturday. In the meantime I'm trying to work out my summer plans and figure out why all the emails I send to anyone at Tulane keep getting bounced back to me. I thought maybe one or two of the addresses was wrong but after getting 10 (literally) different emails returned to me I'm pretty sure it's their problem and not mine.
-Rachel

The Stew

The Santa Barbara Stew was amazing yesterday. For those reading this that don't know what that is, it is the Forest Foundation's first ever television program. This show was created by Martine Beerman who has put in a ton of sweat and tears to create a show that is getting better and better each episode. The show we taped yesterday, which will air in two weeks, features the sex interns of UCSB. These two students promote safe sex and STD awareness to students and the hosts of the show had a great time with them. I also want to give a shout out to James who directed the show yesterday. It was his directing debut, but he stepped up to the challenge and he felt great about it.

Martine, you are doing great work!!

Jordan

Back to work

I missed writing to you these past two weeks while I was away. Considering how neither of us has attempted a project like this before, I think we're doing much much better than one would suspect. I give us five gold stars. One of the more interesting things about the project has been how much I'm enjoying it; maybe this kind of work is something I should look into. I've been very bad. I had the privelage of meeting with the two program directors out there who are doing there part to build community in an area that has been ravaged by natural disaster. There are entire communities in New Orleans that were literaly pulvarized by the storm. There homes are now piles of woodchips behind a couple of cement steps that did not get destroyed. But the people of New Orleans love their city and are coming back bringing the best and worst of any city back with them. The music, the food, and and antics are above par, what a wonderful town.

jordan

In the Field

A few of the full timers just returned from PLP, the Professional Leaders Project with a mission of training the next generation of Jewish leaders. It was an exciting conference that truly gave me a sense of purpose, and placed the Forest Foundation in more of a global setting. We are a Foundation in a sea of Foundations and organizations. It was gratifying to know though, that we are becoming noticed and recognized for our innovation and abilities. The Moishe House is breaking new ground and making history as a new way of reaching Jews. Our Program Directorships and system of training future leaders is being implemented in other various organizations. We've been going at it for a few years, and already others' our following in our footsteps.

-Aaron

It's Raining Very Hard

Well, I hope that wherever you are reading this blog right now that your weather is significantly nicer than what we're experiencing here in Santa Barbara. I am going to be meeting out two esteemed Forest Foundation program directors to get to know them and to do a training with them. This trip is particularly exciting because I will be taking the Himovitz family along with me to the training and to meet these students. Support from families like the Himovitz' have been integral to the success of the Forest Foundation in Santa Barbara, and have given us a safety net here. I am hoping that when the Himovitz' share their experiences about the Forest Foundation with the two girls, it will have a powerful impact on them, and I also think that it will lend to our legitimacy.

Jordan

Marketing

Aaron and I have been working intensely today on some sweet marketing materials for the public to see real soon. A short lived winter has finally ended, it seems, in CA, with the sun shining and warming our backs. To keep you up to speed, I’m embracing my role more and more as makeshift graphic designer, helping out many different projects, my main focus the poster for the Jewish festival.

Things have been going great with my Program Directors, who are currently on Spring Break. The Foundation strives for leadership development, and what are leaders but talented people with amazing skills? Feedback and monitoring oneself is a top priority for me, and the past few days have been chock full of self-reflection and observations. It’s nice to know I’m doing a good job, but more valuable to know what I can get better at. Don’t be afraid to take risks. Challenge yourself to excel in areas you never thought possible. With a little bit of imagination, and a dream, you can make it happen.

Teamwork

Wednesday was a huge success for me, and a fun day at that. I had the fortune of leading a team-building workshop for the SBCC Women's softball team. We went through a number of activities and had some really great conversations about team work, communication, and attitude. Not the kind you throw, the kind you eat. For those of you out there that are not from the south, you may refer to such things as "snow cones."
I was driving down Carrolton Avenue last night when I saw a small unsuspecting sign "Plum St. Snowballs Now Open!"
I've been thinking about snowballs since 8:15 last night and finally just got over there to enjoy on. It is also perfect snowball eating weather, approximately 76 degrees.

Okay now on to business....we are having our Lakeview clean up on Saturday. Went out and hung up some signs around town this afternoon. Also just bought a digital camera so that I can take pictures a the event and all events for that matter.

Oh and I should warn you that I'm going to Spain for a week. Now I know how Isaac must feel a lot of the time. It doesn't really help though when the power goes out for several hours during the day, which was the case today - twice. The first power outage wasn't so bad, it only lasted for about half an hour. But about a half hour after the power initially came back on, everything went out again. And it went out in style! Everything in the office turned on real fast, the lights, stereo, TV and so on, followed by a loud pop where all electronics shut off immediately. This second outage lasted a few hours.

But the point of this blog isn't that the power went out - twice - it's that its just been one of those days where it only feels appropriate that that kind of thing would happen. Yes, it's been a long day, but at least I'll probably finish this blog before the power goes out again... yeah, I think I made it.

-Logan

The Flash

So we've been working hardcore, revamping the Flash for all its glory. There have been numerous Shabbat dinners including one in Seattle for young adult couples - 9 altogether. Shown here is a picture of the most recent San Francisco movie night which rented a projector to show cult favorite "Army of Darkness." I just went to Loyola University to meet with a group of students to talk about The Forest Foundation. I expected it to be 2 or 3 students but there were more like 10. It was a bit intimidating but overall a good experience. I had the chance to tell them all about the wonderful opportunities there are working with The Forest Foundation.
On Saturday I went with one of my PD's to a meeting in Lakeview which is an area in New Orleans that was devastated by the hurricane. We announced that she will be organizing semimonthly clean ups in the area starting next Saturday.

Semimonthly means occurring twice a month. Did you know that? I did not. Had to use the ole websters online dictionary. I kept wanting to use the word "biweekly" but that in fact means twice a week. So you would think the word to use would be "bimonthly" but it actually means occuring every two months. I'm a word nerd. big one.

Anyway, hope your day is going as well as mine. Oh, and my brother and sister in law are having a baby and they just found out that it's going to be a boy. very exciting stuff.

Blogging Skills

Whoa! Welcome to my official blog with the Foundation. It only seems natural that I write on Fridays, only hours before the Sabbath. My name is Aaron Small, I'm out "In the Field" (hence the title), so get ready.

On the left is a photo shot during the "A lil' bit more than Manischewitz" Wine Tasting trip in Santa Barbara. Look at their cute punims! 2nd from the right is Justin Young, a Program Director driven to create fun social and networking events for Jewish college students.

The event was amazing; over 38 students and professionals showed up and <strike>drank</strike> tasted wine in the Santa Ynez Valley. More importantly, it constructed a positive memory, and affected and changed people in a unique way. The Forest Foundation is on a mission of change, positive change, and one of the ways is by creating programs that increase the surrounding happiness, and increasing it exponentially. They weren't 38 people simply riding a bus and tasting wine - it surpassed and transformed from the average to an elevated level, with proper organization, direction, and attitude. Granted, the wine could have had something to do with it. Okay, it probably did. Today I picked up Margie, one of the UC Berkeley students I work with, around 1:30 p.m. and we headed over to the elementary school in Richmond where she works on Tuesdays and Thursdays. We talked a bit on the way over, which I enjoyed. I've known Margie since before she started high school, much less college. We were at Camp Tawonga together for a summer or two.

We got a tad lost as I always seem to when heading over to Chavez elementary and then we headed into the trailer in the school's back parking lot where Diego Garcia has his office. Diego, the head of the Healthy Start afterschool program through which Margie works, grew up in Richmond himslelf and has a wonderful track record of successful work in schools with "at-risk youth."

We shook hands and chatted for a bit and then I follow Margie to Ms. Vasquez's classroom where she normally begins her afternoons. As soon as I entered the classroom one young boy, Valdomar, asked my bluntly - "What's your name!" I repeated the question right back to him with a little bit of attitude. "Blabbermouth" he muttered as he walked over to a table to take his homework out.

Once I got situated and put my things down I headed over to the one table where there was not an adult. Margie told me to be patient and that the students would ask me for help when they needed it. Sure enough, Valdomar was staring at his blank page of math problems and then staring right back at me. Minutes later we were drawing 28 different candy bars on a piece of scratch paper and drawing lines to the four friends of his we were dividing them amongst and trying to create a concrete example of a simple division problem.

Valdomar soon grew tired of his math and wandered off. I snapped a few pictures of Margie and then we all headed out on to the playground. I got beat up at tetherball (I don't think we played regulation rules) by a 3rd grader and then wandered over to the soccer field where Margie was already trudging around in her Ugz boots. Valdomar was the goalie and I was the primary defender and we played a great game.

Before I knew it it was 5:30 and I was saying goodbye to Margie as I dropped her off at her dorm room. Margie and I had had a lot of fun and it was so clear that we had made a big difference for all the people we came into contact with that day. Is that work? I don't know - it certainly doesn't feel like it.

Things are going great up here in the Bay Area. Look for more info about Margie's "Art Makes You Smart" program in the coming Flash (3/17).

Today Logan and I went to UCSB's summer job fair. So I've never written a blog before. And I'm pretty excited about it. A little bit nervous actually.
Who's out there reading this? Are they judging me? Probably, I don't blame you.
But anyway Tuesdays are my days. So here goes....
I live in New Orleans. About 6 weeks ago we started the Forest Foundation here. I've hired two program directors and interviewed lots of potentials. There is so much work to do here it's a bit overwhelming really. But things are coming along nicely so far.
Since this is my first entry I thought I would start off slow but please don't give up on me yet. The Bay Area is different from my own group, in that most of the Program Directors there work in conjunction with other organizations, while my PDs usually plan and promote events.

The idea of not having boundaries or restrictions on your program is undoubtedly challenging and scary for some. It's only when you realize the freedom of the situation and opportunity presented do we realize that now is the time to act on how we feel, and invent programs that are meaningful for us. If your heart is into it, than that's all you need. the rest will follow.

-Aaron

Updates - Feb

A few updates....

My retreat rocked, the Flash has been received with wide acclaim, Jordan got back from Boston safe and sound, Logan has been progressing beautifully on the Network for Social Change, Moshe house in Seattle is up-----watch out, just we're moving at full speed!!!

Aaron

the flash

Aaron here, blogging from headquarters!

Currently we're in the final stages of our launch of the Foundation Flash, our first ever e-newsletter! How strange it is that blogging is now as ubiquitous as the internet itself. A year and a half ago I'd never even heard of blogging; now, it's everywhere. When I was first asked to write a Forest Foundation blog, I was terribly confused. I had no idea what a blog was. We've been lucky to have two great sites, and two great designers, over the past year.

6. Jewish College Night - An unprecedented celebratory event bringing together young Jews from all around Southern California.

Best of 05

With the new year now only a few days away, I've been seeing a lot of "Best of 2005" retrospectives all over the media. So, I thought I'd do a "Best of the Forest Foundation 2005" list over the next couple of days, starting with numbers ten through eight today.

10. Foundation Newsletters - They started on the basis of two per academic quarter this year, and they've just been getting better and better

9. Yashiya - Our very own foundation written, produced, and acted musical.

8. The five us are literally working nonstop on evaluating how all facets of the Foundation are doing, what we need to keep doing, and what we need to stop doing. As well as meetings, trainings, systems, retreats, the NSC, socials, literally EVERYTHING.

Logan and I met yesterday and had a very productive meeting, streamlining office and and Program Director management.
